Crowns
In this moving and celebratory play with music, hats
become a springboard for an exploration of black history
and identity. The story is told from the point of view
of a young black woman who has come down South to stay
with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn.
Hats are everywhere, in exquisite variety, and the
characters use the hats to tell tales concerning
everything from the etiquette of hats to their
historical and contemporary social functioning. The
conclusion finds the standoffish young woman, whose
cultural identity as a young black woman has been so at
odds with the more traditional and older Southern
blacks, embracing hats and their cultural significance
as a part of her own fiercely independent identity. By
turns humorous and heartfelt, this is a play with plenty
of “hattitude!” Call 800.523.2820 or 910.343.3664.

Darryl Lauster: Recreating
An installation of objects by Houston artist and art
history instructor Darryl Lauster. The haunting resin
and porcelain objects reflect the artist’s extensive
research of 18th and 19th century American decorative
arts, as well as his study of 20th century Modernists
such as Alexander Calder, Constantin Brancusi and David
Smith. Lauster’s commemorative plates, furniture and
vessels are ghostly hybrids of inherited cultural
values, contemporary aesthetic influence and ethical
concerns. The artist observes: “I continue, in a way,
dissecting a collective history, communicating in
contemporary forms the traditions begun centuries before
me.” Call 910.395.5999 for more information.
