NC Azalea Festival Triathlon

The Azalea Festival Triathlon draws athletes from all over the South. This grueling triple-sport event tests the strength and endurance of even the most determined competitors. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., the event involves a 300-yard swim followed by a 20K bike segment and a 5K run with 11 age divisions. The entire event takes place on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Participants tackle the pool at Trask Coliseum, then hop on their bikes for two laps around the campus and the adjoining residential streets. Cole Brothers Circus

Covering more than an acre of ground, the Cole Bros. Circus Big Top houses the North Carolina Azalea Festival's traditional circus. Its combination of acrobatics, clowns, trained animal acts and more draws packed crowds each year. Nonstop action fills the Big Top in this three-ring, two-hour performance. Lions, tigers, jugglers, acrobats, horses, stilt walkers, and trapeze artists plus a host of other exciting entertainers perform to the rousing sounds of a live, nine-piece brass band. The tent raising will begin at 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, at the Wilmington International Airport Fairgrounds. This is a free event open to the public. Aquarium’s “Alligator Egg Hunt”

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher invites 5- to 7-year-olds to participate in a special Easter-weekend alligator program and “Alligator Egg Hunt.” This year the program is a two-day event that will offer four programs. They will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Children must register in advance, and a fee is required. The program includes candy, prizes and fun ways to learn about alligators. Participants will make their own alligator egg baskets, handle alligator skulls and teeth and get a close-up look at a live ‘gator hatchling. Children's Museum Grand Opening

On April 23, the Children’s Museum of Wilmington will celebrate the Grand Opening of its new, 16,000 square foot location at Second and Orange Streets downtown. The new space features five times the capacity of the old Market Street location, allowing the museum to significantly expand its permanent exhibits and special event programming. More than 45,000 people are expected to visit the new Museum during its first year of operation.
