Management Area located on the north end of
Wrightsville Beach is an important bird sanctuary that
provides key breeding and foraging habitat essential
to colonial beach-nesting waterbirds. The Mason Inlet
Bird Walk enables participants to observe nesting
American Oystercatchers, Black Skimmers, Least Terns
and numerous other waterbirds in their natural
surroundings. Activities include bird identification
and hands-on exploration of tide pools and sand flat

This four-hour guided trip takes participants up
Pender County’s majestic Black River aboard the
Capt. J.N. Maffitt. Embarking from the downtown
Wilmington riverfront, we cruise up the Cape Fear
River and then into the primordial world of the Black
River with its old growth Bald Cypress and Tupelo Gum
swamp. Pileated Woodpeckers and flocks of colorful
warblers and other neo-tropical songbirds can be heard
and seen as we boat upriver. Black bear, bobcat,
American Alligator and other seldom-seen wildlife may
make an appearance, but more common encounters will be
with river turtles, Belted Kingfishers, herons, and
