8-ton Armstrong Cannon at Fort Fisher State Historic Site

The famous 8-ton Armstrong cannon is a piece of British-made artillery that was actually used at Fort Fisher during the Civil War. The cannon had the capability of firing 150-pound shells up to 5 miles and featured innovative technology that changed the design and manufacture of artillery. The Armstrong is on loan from the U.S. Army and the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, as part of observances surrounding the 140th Anniversary of the ending of the Civil War. Greenhouse Tour, Annual

The Hobby Greenhouse Club will have it annual greenhouse tour. The greenhouses will be open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. A wide variety of greenhouses will be open for inspection - large commercial greenhouses, institutional greenhouses and small private greenhouses. The tour starts at the New Hanover County Arboretum – George Ross greenhouse at 6206 Oleander Drive. 55th Annual Camellia Show and Plant Sale
