8-ton Armstrong Cannon at Fort Fisher State
Historic Site
The famous 8-ton Armstrong cannon is a piece of
British-made artillery that was actually used at Fort
Fisher during the Civil War. The cannon had the
capability of firing 150-pound shells up to 5 miles and
featured innovative technology that changed the design
and manufacture of artillery. The Armstrong is on loan
from the U.S. Army and the United States Military
Academy at West Point, New York, as part of observances
surrounding the 140th Anniversary of the ending of the

The Hobby Greenhouse Club will have it annual
greenhouse tour. The greenhouses will be open from 9am
to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. A wide
variety of greenhouses will be open for inspection -

and small private greenhouses. The tour starts at the
New Hanover County Arboretum – George Ross greenhouse

55th Annual Camellia Show and Plant Sale

The Tidewater Camellia Club presents this long
standing community event free of charge to the public.
Come and enjoy the myriad of color provided by over a
thousand camellia blooms. In the morning the blossoms
will compete for exquisite prizes and be judged by a
panel of American Camellia Society certified judges.
After the competition is complete at noon, the doors
will open to the public – free of charge - so that
they can enjoy the wide variety of camellias grown in
the region. In combination with the show, the Tidewater
Camellia Club will sell camellia care booklets and
camellias plants. The plant sale starts at noon and goes
