141st Anniversary of the Capture of Fort Fisher

Staff and volunteers will don Civil War era clothing and give weapons demonstrations and talks. The site opens and the program starts at 10:00 am. Cannons will be fired from the top of the fort's wall on the hour at approximately 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 2:45, 4:00 and 5:00. Muskets will be fired from the palisade fence on the half hour at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30. The program ends right after the 5:00 artillery firing. Call 910/458-5538 for information.

8-ton Armstrong Cannon at Fort Fisher State Historic Site

The famous 8-ton Armstrong cannon is a piece of British-made artillery that was actually used at Fort Fisher during the Civil War. The cannon had the capability of firing 150-pound shells up to 5 miles and featured innovative technology that changed the design and manufacture of artillery. The Armstrong is on loan from the U.S. Army and the United States Military Academy at West Point , New York , as part of observances surrounding the 140th Anniversary of the ending of the Civil War.
