Holden Beach, NC
Long thought as one of North Carolinas most beautiful barrier
islands, Holden Beach residents are working hard to keep it that way by
instituting laws to protect the natural beauty and serenity of the
island well through the next century.
This commitment to preservation has made Holden Beach a favorite
destination for retirees seeking the solitude of a small seaside town.
But thanks to a modern bridge, completed in 1986, Holden Beach offers
the best of an isolated beachfront community and all the conveniences of
the modern world with Wilmington just over 30 minutes away by car.
The tiny island remained in the Holden family, after it was purchased
from the Crown prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1969 the island was
sold and incorporated with the stipulation that commercial development
be kept to a minimum. Except for a few small, locally owned stores, a
post office, and meager dining establishments ? just enough to sustain
residents on a day-to-day basis - the island has been able to repel
the hordes of commercial chains and developments known to swarm beach
communities.
Though not particularly inviting to the commercial
world, Holden Beach has embraced those who share a love for everything
beachfront communities have to offer. The island provides ample parking
for beachgoers, along with numerous public showers and handicap ramps,
making it possible for wheelchair bound visitors to have easy access to
the warm waters of the Atlantic.
Holden Beach is also one of the largest nesting areas and a sanctuary
for the endangered Loggerhead sea turtle. Residents take great pride in
this fact, and considerable measures are taken to protect nests on the
beach and the hatchlings until they are big enough to fend for
themselves.
Though the island may be secluded, void of many of the trappings of
the outside world, there is still plenty to do. The island offers a
fishing pier, marina and boat landing, and some of the world's finest
golf courses are less than an hour away at Myrtle Beach.
