Ocean Isle Beach, NC
Almost straddling the North Carolina, South Carolina state line,
Ocean Isle Beach is one of North Carolina's southernmost barrier
islands, and a favorite of retirees looking for that idyllic beach town
lifestyle.
Just over seven miles long, this island spent much of its history
belonging to a conglomeration of people, none of who really had a
direction for the island in mind. Until the 1950s, the island was little
more than a family getaway for those who owned the sprawling expanses of
ocean front property. In 1953 the island was purchased in its entirety
by Odell Williamson, and incorporated into the town of Ocean Isle Beach
in 1959.
Since its incorporation, the island community has made a concentrated
effort not to become like so many of the other island resort communities
up and down the Atlantic coast. This unique village of neo-traditional
clapboard houses has retained its beach atmosphere that brought throngs
of vacationers to the area fifty years ago. The island is proud to be
the antithesis of the wall-to-wall condominiums that have taken over so
many other island towns.
The tiny island town is also proud to be known to have the best
beaches on the North Carolina coast. The warm seasonal waters of the
Atlantic combines with a wide, gently sloping shoreline, featuring
mandated public access every 500 feet, making Ocean Isle Beach ideal for
beach lovers of all ages.
Besides the beaches, what most distinguishes Ocean Isle Beach from
other barrier island communities is the system of canals that run
throughout the island, connecting almost every home to the Intracoastal
Waterway. This feature makes the island an ideal home for boat owners,
as most homes are equipped with a dock.
Besides lounging on the pristine beaches and partaking in one of the
many water sports the island's location affords, there are at least a
dozen golf courses within a 20 minute drive, along with popular shopping
and dining alternatives not found in the locally owned businesses on the
island.
