Shallotte, NC

Shallotte NC About halfway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach lies a town that, despite its steady growth, has so far managed to preserve its rural, small-town, coastal character. Shallotte, with such a central location and close proximity to the South Brunswick beaches, is attracting ever-increasing numbers of retirees and investors.

Besides the town itself, the countryside presents an array of terrain from rolling woodlands to tidal marshes. Along the Shallotte River, the osprey and egret still thrive. Yet, despite Shallotte's natural wealth, the rate of growth in the community, the attraction of lower-than-average taxes and reasonable prices indicates Shallotte is a very favorable investment for those buying real estate.

Shallotte serves as the gateway to a number of South Brunswick beaches, namely Holden, Ocean Isle, and Sunset beaches. The town is also minutes away from Calabash, "The Seafood Capital of the World". Not to be outdone by its neighbor, though, Shallotte offers a variety of both chain and local restaurants, such as local favorite Duffer's Bar & Grill. Whether a diner is craving Mexican, a grilled rib eye or the fried local catch of the day, he can be satisfied in Shallotte. For cooking enthusiasts, various seafood stands will keep you well provided with the freshest shrimp, scallops, crabs and various fishes. Since Shallotte serves most of the nearby islands, a choice of grocery stores, banks, shops, and legal and financial services are within easy reach. Otherwise, a big night out on the town simply entails a quick drive to nearby Wilmington.

For a taste of history, a visit to nearby Fort Fisher reveals the last Confederate stronghold to fall to the Union army. Although the ocean has reclaimed much of the fort, the site still brags the largest collection of earthworks in the South. The area offers an astounding number of golf courses. Shallotte alone has courses ranging from Brunswick County's original course, Brierwood Golf Course, to a recent Arnold Palmer design, River's Edge Golf Course.

For outdoors enthusiasts, all manner of water sports abound. Quail, wild turkey, deer, ducks, and other native and migratory species afford challenging sport. For anglers, naturally, opportunities to take both fresh and saltwater fish seem almost limitless.
